Fancy goldfish is the term given to individuals of the common goldfish (Carassius auratus) that have been bred for specific physical characteristics such as telescope eyes, double "fan" tails or ornate head adornments such as the "wen" of orandas. As a result of this intentional line breeding fancy goldfish are a little like pedigree dogs and often less hardy than their more standard or, indeed, mongrel counterparts. As a result they usually demand good water quality which means adequate filtration. As many are bred in warmer climes even applying some heat to the aquarium with a dedicated aquarium heaterstat can be useful but be aware that the warmer the water is, the more active the fish will be and the greater their demands on the resources of the aquarium such as food, filtration and oxygen levels.
